Lecturers complain as unpaid salaries rise to 13 months

1>>Lecturers in many of the nation’s
tertiary institutions are
facing hard times due to non-payment of
their salaries and
other entitlements, The PUNCH
investigations have revealed.
The findings showed that some of tertiary
institutions,
comprising universities, polytechnics and
colleges of
education, owed their lecturers and other
workers between
two and 13 months’ salaries.

The development, our correspondents
gathered, had
resulted in industrial actions and exposure
of their family
members to hard times. It has also
disrupted academics in
many of the institutions.
For instance, at the Tai Solarin College of
Education, Omu
Ijebu, Ogun State, one of our
correspondents gathered that
its authorities owed the lecturers 13
months’ salaries as of
the end of June.
Following this, a majority of the lecturers
have stayed away
from the school in order to seek other ways
of survival.
In fact, three weeks ago in Abeokuta, Ogun
State capital,
their students protested against the plight
of their lecturers.
The Student Union President, Ibrahim
Dario, who led the
protest, said the issue of unpaid salaries
had forced their
lecturers out of school.
“It is skeletal lecture regime that we now
operate at TASCE,
since our lecturers are being owed 13
months’ salaries. They
only come when they could raise money for
transportation.
“We have paid our tuition and deserve to
be taught, but we
are not getting value for our money. We
are appealing to the
state government to pay our lecturers, so
that full lectures
can resume.”
The Chairman, Colleges of Education
Academic Staff Union,
TASCE chapter, Dr. Dan Oludipe, said the
lecturers in the
institution were experiencing hard times,
based on non-
payment of their 13-months’ salaries.
Oludipe, who said that they received only
January, February,
March and August salaries last year, noted
they had yet to
get salaries in 2016.
He added, “We are not on strike but we
have withdrawn our
services in terms of lecturing, attending to
meetings and
examinations, because we do not have the
wherewithal to
transport ourselves to and from school. We
are appealing to
the state government to pay us our
money.”
In Ondo State, workers, including lecturers
at the Adekunle
Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko,
embarked on strike on
Monday to kick against the non-payment
of the salaries.
Their counterparts at the State University
of Science and
Technology, Okitipupa, had a few days ago
commenced their
own industrial action.
According to the Chairman of the AAUA’s
chapter of the
Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr.
Sola Fayose, the
authorities owe lecturers three months’
salaries.
He explained, “The school owes our
salaries in two phases.
We received half salary from December to
March and we
have not been paid any salary from April
to date, so we have
to withdraw our services, starting from
today (Monday) until
we receive our salaries.”
Similarly, the Chairman of the OSUSTECH’s
chapter of the
Senior Staff Association of Nigerian
Universities, Mr. Dayo
Temowo, said the strike in the institution
would continue
until they received their salaries.
He said, “The state government owes us
five months’ salaries
from February to June. That is why we
commenced the
strike. Our agitation for the payment of the
arrears is very
strong. As I speak to you, we are on
strike.”
According to the University of Ibadan,
Academic Staff Union
of Universities Chairman, Omole Ayodeji,
the ivory tower
has been having a shortfall of N301m in
its allocation from
the Federal Government since last
December. The
development, he said, had resulted in the
workers being
paid less than 100 per cent of their
salaries.
Ayodeji noted that as of June, the school
owed both the
academic and non-academic staff about
N900m.
He said, “Workers in the institution have
been receiving 91
per cent of their salaries. This is because
the school was
having a shortfall of N310m from what
comes to it from
federal allocation. We showed
understanding when the
budget was not passed. But after it was
passed, the
authorities said during a meeting with
workers
representatives that the arrears of salaries
could not be paid
because the FG had not paid full
allocation to the school.
The situation has remained the same.”
A few weeks ago, its Vice-Chancellor, Prof.
Idowu Olayinka,
said that with 6,000 workers in its payroll,
it needed about
N878m to pay monthly salaries.
One of our correspondents gathered that as
of January, the
ivory tower received only N782m.
The Oyo State Government also owes
members of staff of
The Polytechnic, Ibadan. A source said the
government owed
workers in the school five months’ salaries.
Meanwhile, at the federal universities,
including the
University of Lagos, University of Nigeria
and the University
of Calabar, among others, their authorities
have been
regular with the payment of the workers’
salaries.
At the Cross River University of Technology
also, its ASUU
Chairman, Dr. Emma Ettah, told one of our
correspondents
that its management did not owe them.
He, however,
lamented the inability of the state
government to pay their
check-off dues running into millions of
naira.
Ettah added, “We have been paid our
salaries up to date.
The problem we have with the government
is the check-off
due that has not been paid.”
For the Provost, Akwa Ibom State College
of Education,
Afaha Nsit, Dr. Patrick Uko, the state
government does not
owe workers of the school.
The Public Relations Officer of the Akwa
Ibom State
Polytechnic, Mrs. Gloria Udoudom, also
confirmed that
workers of the polytechnic were not being
owed salaries.
According to a senior employee of the
Akwa Ibom State
University, who craved anonymity, the
government does not
owe them salaries.
All attempts to talk with the state Nigeria
Labour Congress
Chairman, Mr. Etim Ukpong, failed, as he
did not answer our
telephone inquiry. He also did not respond
to text message
sent to him as of 7pm on Monday.

I Greet My Husband Everyday With Kiss – Mrs Alakija, #

Your name is more popular than your
husband's. Do you know if sometimes in
his sober moment, he asks himself ‘why is
my wife more popular than I am’?
I believe that that is on the contrary. You
know why? He is extremely shy. He does
not like publicity. I’m an extrovert; I don’t
mind publicity. I like to throw parties; he
likes to listen to music.
Nowadays, marriages fail a lot but what
would you describe as the secret that has
sustained your marriage for so long?
A lot of things make marriages break.
What I have noticed over the years is that
a marriage doesn’t break suddenly or in a
day; it is a gradual process.
And the earlier you nip it in the bud, the
better. And it is always better to know
what the dos and don’ts of marriage are
before you get into it so that you don’t
get your fingers burnt and so that you can
enjoy rather than endure your marriage.
One of the tenements of marriage is that
you must communicate with one another.
If you do not talk to one another regularly
enough, your love can begin to grow cold.
You may begin to drift apart and then
other things begin to set in. The Bible
tells us that if one person offends the
other, you need to take care of that matter
immediately and not let it degenerate.Mrs Folorunsho Alakija makes some very
strong points about life and marriage.
Everyone should learn from this:
At 65, is age just a number, do you look
forward to 100 years or do you wish you
were younger?
For me, every day of my life is a new day,
a new beginning. It is a testimony. I look
at everyday as something that is a new
challenge. I don’t see my age to be
something that tells me, ‘Oh! You are
getting older and won’t be able to do this
or that’. I appreciate every new day and
take it as it comes. I tackle everything I
need to tackle. I don’t feel tired easily.
I feel as young as I was many years back.
Yes, now and again, you get the odd pain
here and there but you think nothing of it.
You get your regular medical checkups
and just move on with whatever you need
to do. You do it and then it is about what
is next.
You have been married for close to 40
years. Are you still in love with your
husband the way you were when you met
him many years ago?
If anyone of us is abroad, for instance, the
two of us would make sure that we call
each other a minimum of twice a day. We
have spoken three times already today.
If it wasn’t that I was running late for the
interview, I would have picked up the
phone again to ask him to buy me three
brushes but I had to give the job to my
assistant to do. So every little thing, we
are talking throughout the day.
You are still friends?
Very much so too. We are lovers, friends,
brother and sister.
Where did you meet him?
We met at a party in Surulere, Lagos, two
weeks after I relocated to Nigeria from
England. The party was in the evening. So
my brother, his fiancée and I were
attending that event and we were all
seated together.
Then came along my husband-to-be; he
said to me ‘why are you following your
brother about’? I said ‘what do you
mean’? Then he accosted my brother who
he knew well and said your sister is a big
girl, why are you allowing her to follow
you about?
Then my brother said, ‘stay away from my
sister. Leave her alone’.
Anyway, we got talking and after the
party, he suggested that I should sit with
him in his car rather than sit in my
brother’s car so we could carry on with
our conversation and we would be driving
in a convoy back to our abodes. So we
carried on talking and said goodnight. But
from that night, unless one of us is
abroad, there has been no day that we
have not seen each other.
Ever since that day, we have seen each
other every day unless one person is away
and the other is somewhere else.

Scrapping Of Post-UTME Is A Terrible Mistake – Afe Babalola

Elder statesman and lawyer, Aare Afe
Babalola (SAN) has described the
scrapping of the post-Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (post-
UTME, otherwise called post-JAMB) by
the Federal Government as a
“calamitous mistake.”
The founder of Afe Babalola
University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD), said
he was “more than shocked by the
announcement” from the Minster of
Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu,
that post-UTME as part of the
qualifying procedure for admission
into Nigerian universities, has now
been cancelled.
On governance, he called for a return
to regionalism and parliamentary
system of government, saying for
Nigeria to come out of its myriads of
socio-political and economic
problems, it needs a restructuring
that would make the regions stronger
and control their resources.
Babalola, who was in the vanguard of
those who canvassed for the
qualifying examinations as the Pro-
Chancellor of the University of Lagos,
said: “This, to me, is nothing but a
most calamitous mistake, which poses
danger and an irreversible adverse
effect on the quality of education in
this country.”
He said he was particularly surprised
and worried that such a far-reaching
decision could be taken without due
and adequate consideration for how
the concept of the post- UTME came
into being.
“It is rather unfortunate that
human memory is very short. In
2003, it was discovered by
university administrators in this
country that many of the students
admitted into Nigerian universities
through JAMB were not only
academically deficient, they could
also not justify the high marks
scored in JAMB examinations.
“Cases abound whereby JAMB
examination papers were being
openly compromised and sold to
students at examination centers,
while some examination centers,
mischievously dubbed miracle
centres, were openly, but
unofficially designed to guarantee
high marks for some candidates.
“The most pathetic aspect of this
perfidy is that we later found out
that most of these students with
such high marks were unable to
cope academically upon their being
admitted to the universities.”
He added:-
“It was at this point of this national
embarrassment that the Committee
of Pro-Chancellors of Nigerian
Universities, under my
chairmanship, met in Abuja, x-
rayed the cankerworm and
recommended to former President
Olusegun Obasanjo that JAMB
should be scrapped, because the
integrity of its examinations has
been called to question.
“I must stress at this point that the
introduction of post-UTME was not
decided by the Committee of Pro-
Chancellors of Nigerian Universities
alone; the matter was thrown open,
with contributions from
stakeholders and interested and
concerned members of the different
strata of society.
“However, government in its
wisdom, decided to adopt a middle-
way approach to the matter by
saying that JAMB should continue to
be and conduct its business of
qualifying examinations to tertiary
institutions in Nigeria, while post-
UTME should be introduced.
“This translates to the fact that
JAMB will be used as the basis for
admission into Nigerian
universities, but the universities are
free to conduct screening exercises,
which include administering
questions in relevant courses, for
their would-be students.”
According to him: “The post-UTME
had proved to be a veritable quality
control measure, which I believed
had been working and working
well.
“For example, the first post-UTME
we conducted at the University of
Lagos, where I was then the Pro-
Chancellor and Chairman of
Council, yielded positive dividends.
“There was this student with a very
impressive result, who applied to
study Law. Since English Literature
was and still central to the
admission of students to study Law,
he was asked if he knew a novel
called Things Fall Apart and he
answered in the affirmative. We
then asked him if he knew the
author.
“The hall was filled with
consternation when the young man
named the late Gen. Sanni Abacha
as the author of Things Fall Apart.
“With the above scenario, it became
crystal clear that Nigerian
universities were no places
candidates should come to with
compromised and procured results.
“Post UTME is a shield that expose
students who passess Jamb by
Magic.. This development will sure
boost the number of Unemployment
in Nigeria”.

Tertiary institutions to close down Next week

Tertiary Institutions to Close-down Next Week

THE Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Thursday said the over 40 million Nigerian students would re-enact the Occupy Nigeria protest against the removal of subsidy from petroleum product next week.

The National President of NANs, Comrade Tijani Shehu, stated this in Abuja, at a protest rally where the association called for the removal of the  Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu. He said NANS is already mobilizing Nigerias students to resist the new N145 per litre pump price of the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, otherwise called petrol.

According to him, “A directive has been issued to all tertiary institutions to shut down all campuses on Tuesday and Wednesday, next week.  After that, they will all converge on Abuja for a mass protest.

”On behalf of NANS and the whole 40.1 million Nigeria students, we condemn the new fuel price and by Tuesday or Wednesday, the whole Nigeria student would occupy Nigeria. So the Federal Government should look into this before NANS mobilize the entire Nigeria students to occupy Nigeria”.

The Institute of Education, University of Ilorin is making plans to provide free adult education and counselling services  to its host community.
This development was confirmed by Prof. Mudashiru Yusuf, the Director of the Institute in Ilorin.
While speaking to newsmen on Monday, April 11, Yusuf said the services, which would commence before the end of the year, was part of the university’s corporate social responsibility.
“Efforts are on to bring back the self-sustaining extramural classes for candidates who have been failing in public examinations like the UTME and WAEC.
“ The programme will be carried out as social services, its costs will be within the means of members of the University’s host community, “ he said.
He also added that the institute would introduce diploma programmes in Human Kinetics, Health Education, Instructional Radio and Television, Arts and Craft, and Photography for School Certificate holders, and HND conversion programme.

Yet Another One! BSU Students Protest Hike In Sch Fees, Block Major Road

Yet Another One! BSU Students Protest Hike In Sch Fees, Block Major Road

Yet another one again. As the UNIPORT protest was going on, which sent two students to their early graves, Benue State University students were also protesting almost the same cause- hike in their school fees.

For example the acceptance fees for freshers was increased from N5000 to N25000 accoridng to the students.

The ever busy Makurdi-Gboko federal highway was blocked for atleast four hours leaving travellers stranded on the high way.

Placards such as  “Reverse this unpopular decision”, “the new fee is anti people”, “our parents cannot afford this” and “we did not bargain for this,” were all displayed freely by the students.

Indeed, is it that the economy of the country has now affected tertiary institutions? If yes, are the students to be blamed? Please don’t put unnecessary pressure on them.

Ondo State Uni, shuts down-Students Protest

The management of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, has reportedly shut down the institution over recent protest embarked upon by students of the school.
On Saturday, April 11, students staged a protest over the death of their colleague, who was allegedly hit by a reckless commercial motorcyclist in the town on Friday night.
University properties worth millions of naira were reportedly destroy during the protest.

22 Female cultist -Nabbed by School Authority

1.-Wesley-Girls’-High-School-Cape-Coast

Twenty-two students of Wesley Girls Senior High School in Cape Coast, in the Central region, have been nabbed by school authorities for practicing occultism.
According to some students who spoke to Starrfmonline.com on condition of anonymity, the culprits were grabbed during their ceremony to induct a new leader for the sect as the previous leader is expected to graduate in June this year.

One of the students disclosed that occultism in the school is prevalent and has been around for the last 23 years.
Most of the students nabbed were first and second year students who had been initiated. The current leader of the group is reported to be in Abban House, a very popular House of the Methodist school.
The occultists who are yet to be penalized by authorities of the school have been handed over to the Methodist Church in Cape Coast to help resolve the matter, Starrfmonline.com checks show.
The situation has, however, created fear and panic amongst students and parents who are alarmed their children could be brainwashed.
The source also confirmed to Starrfmonline.com that the occultists have a special book with various teachings which they use to brainwash and recruit fresh students into their group so the tradition does not fritter away after their departure.
The source revealed that the occultists argue that not all students can be Christians and must be allowed to perform their rituals.
The source also added that the students try to indoctrinate their colleagues by stating that there is nothing immoral about masturbation and lesbianism.
They also hold the view that premarital sex is not a sin contrary to what the Bible says and that there is no need asking for forgiveness of sins since Jesus’ death atoned for all sins.
The source revealed that similar groups were scattered in schools in the Eastern, Greater Accra and the Volta regions while other groups could be found in other institutions.
Several calls placed to the headmistress and other authorities of the school have been futile.
Meanwhile, the presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church in Cape Coast, Rev. Abekah Wilson said he was yet to be informed about the issue when Starrfmonline.com contacted him.

The students blocked all entry and exit points in the institution, leaving the management and other students stranded.

The protesters, who are being led by the leadership of the student union, also barricaded all access roads leading to the institution, including the major East-West road and the Choba-Uniport road.

They are protesting against the increase of their fees and other levies. One more photo below.

The alumni of the University of Osun State, UNIOSUN, say NO TO BIU

Folorunso Alakija, 4th left being assisted by Gov. Aregbesola at the renaming event

By Eromosele Ebhomele

The alumni of the University of Osun State, UNIOSUN, located in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, Nigeria have rejected the recent renaming of the university by the State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola.

Aregbesola had renamed the institution in honour of the late Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, during the institution’s fourth and fifth combined convocation.

But the alumni declared the renaming of the institution as unwise at this point in time, urging Aregbesola to reverse the action.

They are equally considering the option of approaching a court of competent jurisdiction in the land to seek redress on the subject matter if Governor Aregbesola refuses to reverse the action.

According to them, Aregbesola just took the decision unilaterally without considering the interest of all the stakeholders of the university.

In a statement signed by the President of the Alumni Association, Mr. Oluwatosin Abikanlu and the Secretary-General, Mr. Otunde Adebowale, the alumni said the renaming of the university after the former governor old Oyo state had generated reactions where some people see it as a means to score cheap political popularity and bring confusion into the system, while some people, particularly members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, see the action as a welcome development.

The alumni argued that the late Chief Bola Ige had nothing to do with the establishment of the university aside being a political leader in the state before he died in December 2001, noting further that the acronym of the new name, BIU, had clashed with the Benson Idahosa University, BIU.

They alleged that Aregbesola had not funded the university for the past two and half years aside the money raised by the university management and help from Federal Government agencies like Tetfund.

They noted that renaming any institution at this point in time when the economy was biting every sector of the country is a misplacement of priority.
